On May 9, 2010 Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O'Malley, Deputy District Attorneys Sharmin Bock and Eric Swalwell and D.A. Inspectors Harry Hu and Craig Chew went to Washington D.C. to attend the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial where President Obama spoke. During the week long trip the group also attended several meetings and forums where they presented the Restitution Unit, the H.E.A.T. Watch program, New Beginnings, the Alameda County Family Justice Center and the Alameda County Juvenile Justice Center.
Ms. Bock spoke on a Senate Panel discussing Domestic Human Trafficking, where the H.E.A.T. Watch Program sparked great interest among the attendees. The topic of human trafficking was also addressed in meetings at the Office of Violence Against Women and the Office of Victims of Crime. Ms. O'Malley met with California Senator Diane Feinstein and had the privilege to speak to her about the wonderful work done by the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.
10th Annual International Family Justice Center Conference
This year the 10th Annual International Family Justice Center Conference was held in San Antonio, TX on April 27-29. Nancy O'Malley and Raeanne Passantino attended this three-day event to represent the ACFJC. Nancy, a member of the Family Justice Center Alliance National Advisory Board, presented on the topic of sexual assault response teams. She also presented information on promising practices for Family Justice Centers.
The ACFJC is one of three Regional Training Centers in California and Raeanne is the point person for our FJC. In addition to attending workshops on leadership, clergy's role and sustainability she also attended meetings with the six Learning Exchange Teams who were at the ACFJC in March.
Highlights of this conference include a presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to Sue Else, President of the National Network to End Domestic Violence; a presentation and update of what the Obama Administration is doing in regarding violence against women and children by Lynn Rosenthal, White House Advisor on Violence Against Women; a tour of the Bexar County Family Justice Center; and an intimate dinner for 250 at Mi Tierra Café Y Panaderia, complete with live Mariachi music. This was a great event that allowed everyone to visit and meet others who are in the field and to have fun after a long day of workshops and breakout groups.
The 11th Annual International Family Justice Center Conference in partnership with The National District Attorneys Association will be held in San Diego on April 5-7, 2011.
