A co-founder of Duluth’s world-renowned Domestic Abuse Intervention Project and a woman considered the “mother” of domestic violence intervention has died.
Ellen Pence, 63, died Friday morning after a long struggle with breast cancer.
“She was brilliant, sharp-witted, loved people and was extremely hard-working,” said Duluth Assistant City Attorney Mary Asmus, a friend of Pence’s for almost 30 years.

Domestic Violence Strangulation Law Passed in California!
In 2011, I had the honor to work with the National Family Justice Alliance and many of you to author SB 430 in California, seeking to make California the 30th state with a specialized statute on strangulation.

OAKLAND -- The Alameda County Family Justice Center (ACFJC) stands alongside our partner agencies, the DA's Office Victim-Witness Assistance Division as well as with statewide and national organizations, in acknowledging October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
The broad aims of the month is to educate, inform and end domestic violence in our communities. We mourn those who have died, celebrate those who survived, and connect those who work to end violence.

The Fourth Annual Alameda County Family Justice Center Gala, "One", was held last Saturday evening, January 29th, at the Rotunda Building in Oakland. Over 300 attended the Black Tie event, which raised money for the FJC's KidZone and other victim support programs offered by the Family Justice Center.
Guests came together from the Bay Area and beyond to unite in support of the FJC, including a number of state, regional and local elected officials. They were treated to a violin concert performed by young players from Alameda County, and were able to bid on a host of generous donations from many local and regional businesses.

LOS ANGELES, March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The Alameda County Family Justice Center has received a $70,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation to develop a system to help health care providers, social service agencies and law enforcement coordinate efforts to assist domestic violence survivors.
