Victims' Bill of Rights "Marsy's Law"

On 11/4/08, by enacting Proposition 9, referred to as the "Victims' Bill of Rights Act of 2008: Marsy's Law" the California citizens voted to provide victims of crimes with certain constitutional rights. By enacting Proposition 9, the California Constitution, Article I, Section 28 (b), has been amended and hereby confers the following rights to those who are victims of crime as defined in the constitution

Verizon Grant to the Family Justice Center

Domestic Violence prevention to be highlighted at Golden State Warriors game

Verizon to present $57,500 grant to Alameda County Family Justice Center and collect used wireless phones to benefit more survivors

WHAT: Verizon will collect used wireless phones/accessories from any carrier at the Golden State Warriors game. All phones collected will go the company's HopeLineŽ program which provides financial support and wireless phones with airtime to local domestic violence programs.

Children's Art Therapy Program has been chosen as the recipient of the 2007 Pearlie Roberson Award for Minority Research. DeafHope is deeply grateful to the Multicultural Committee and the AATA Scholarship Committee of the American Art Therapy Association (AATA) for this incredible honor! Thanks to AATA's support, we are able to initiate planning for our multimedia project, titled "Children Healing from Violence Through Art Therapy."

ACFJC Wins Funding

ALAMEDA COUNTY FAMILY JUSTICE CENTER WINS FEDERAL FUNDING TO EXPAND SERVICES - Department of Justice grant to be utilized to serve family violence victims countywide

Oakland, California. Alameda County Administrator Susan S. Muranishi today announced the county's receipt of a $990,000 grant from the United States Department of Justice to expand the services offered by the Alameda County Family Justice Center.

"We are delighted to expand to a countywide scale the Alameda County Family Justice Center's innovative programs," Muranishi said. "The Family Justice Center brings together government agencies, community-based organizations, and all sectors of our community to focus on effective and compassionate services to victims of family violence. These funds enable the Family Justice Center's partners to continue reaching out to all victims countywide."

BAWAR Graduates Spanish-speaking Counselors

For the first time in the history of Northern California, Bay Area Women Against Rape (BAWAR) will be certifying more than 30 Spanish- speakers as rape crisis counselors.

Graduation for BAWAR's Spanish-speaking advocates will take place at the Alameda County Family Justice Center (located at 470 27th Street, Oakland, CA 94612), at 1:00 pm. on August 11th.

BAWAR invites the participation of the media and the public at this event.
